If silence and isolation had a voice they would surely whisper in the ear of Mariusz Duda and he would decode that Sound into notes!
I'm quite sure those exact notes were lingering in his head for a long time now, perhaps for years but here we have a completely different thing, out of the ordinary.
And for that reason so we have this solo album of this talented multi-dimentional artist. An even better way of putting it a dividing frame of mind of many perspectives, but let me explain...
Originally coming from Poland, a song writer, singer and multi-intrumentalist, leader of the Progressive act Riverside but also founder of Side-project Lunatic Soul and several collaborations added to his personal agenda Mariusz Duda sums up to many dimensions!
About the album, entitled "Lockdown Spaces" which was released in June 26 on Bandcamp in digital format.
Recorded at Serakos studio in Warsaw by Magda and Robert Srzedniccy.
According to the man himself the music is obviously inspired as the title clearly depicts, of mandatory living indoors, inside four walls and confined spaces or so-called "Quarantine".
However observing things closer its nothing more or less than a dark, minimal.
Claustrophobic journey which was manifested during the recordings of Lunatic Soul's forthcoming album. In order to catch the ideal atmosphere Duda decided to play along with electronics, adding samples and "unspecified" vocal layers and loops and effects.
"Lockdown Spaces" starts off with a piece called "Isolated" describing the essence of a dire situation, counting till seven and the sound effect of panting heavily and the same time, whistling as if nothing has happened, showing us that way just how things were, with all the insanity and delusion we all know very well by now and what we have been through.
"Bricks" on the other hand is easily one of my favorites and I especially admire the middle section as Mariusz seemingly counts the days as time passes by..
"And another day has gone" he says, as Quarantine continues.. Waiting.
"Thought Invaders" following by "Pixel Heart" are easily the best moments of the album.
If we could ever picture a heart coming out of its devices in the form of pixels instead of pieces that would indeed describe marvelously a great title for a song! On the same page comes "Unboxing Hope" which is simply sublime .. "I don't know if it's gonna end"!
In a nutshell, what we have here isn't just one them everyday efforts, but "Lockdown Spaces" is a product of "the more you listen the more it grows inside of you" becoming one with your inner self.
Infact the man himself admits he was thinking of coming up with a bunch of happy songs but it seems the sour times took the leading role of a real concept here.
Looking at things today all we do is far from living with less. We just find it hard to enjoy the more simple things in life, like spending precious moments with our loved ones, make some time when we don't have the time. Exercise a little, create things or just do nothing at all. We're too occupied with so many things we don't really need, troubling our world and the result is feeling constantly restless all the time with discomfort and discontent. But that's when "Lockdown Spaces" might be the antidote to ease the tension down, just a little.
All instruments and vocals by Mariusz Duda.
